Disclosure: My family and I were invited to the grand opening of The Cowfish. Our meal was provided by Universal Florida in exchange for our honest opinions of their newest restaurant. No monetary compensation was received.
Universal CityWalk’s newest restaurant, The Cowfish, officially opened tonight, bringing the nation’s original “Sushi Burger Bar” to the heart of Universal Orlando’s entertainment complex. My family and I got to experience this exciting one-of-a-kind dining experience and it’s definitely not to be passed up. The Cowfish is certainly unusual, absolutely great with the ability to fuse two niche products seamlessly on the same menu.
Guests visiting this eclectic, three-story restaurant can enjoy an innovative menu made from scratch with the freshest ingredients, outdoor seating with incredible views of CityWalk, colorful décor and custom artwork, vibrant music and more.
When you dine at The Cowfish you won’t just get good sushi or a good burger, they’ve perfected on offering both the best sushi AND the best burger in town.
For an appetizer, we tried the Parmesan Truffle Fries. House fries with truffle and parmesan cheeses, applewood bacon and chives! They arrived piping hot and were incredibly delicious. The gooey, melty cheese smothered with the crisp bacon and the crunch of the chives was to die for. Usually, my 4-year-old will pass up truffle fries but she gobbled these down. As did my 8 month old, 10-year-old, and husband!
All of the burgers at The Cowfish All natural, creative and hearty, the burgers entice with fresh ingredients and bold flavors. Each are a half pound and completely antibiotic and hormone free, and certified humanely raised and handled. My husband instantly zeroed in on the Jalapeño Popper Show-Stopper!
It’s a beef burger, jalapeño-infused cream cheese, jalapeño bacon, fried jalapeños, jalapeño citrus aioli, lettuce, tomato, fresh sliced jalapeños, brioche bun. Yes, more and more jalapeños pied on top of even more jalapeños. Just reading it sets my mouth on fire but my husband said it was the best burger he has had in a long time. A lot of places claim to have spicy burgers but this one was actually up to his standards of what a spicy burger should be.
As if that wasn’t enough spice, he also ordered the Mark’s Roll. Fresh tuna, jalapeño, cream cheese, kani, scallions inside, coated with panko and flash fried. Topped with Japanese mayo and sriracha. Served with ponzu dipping sauce.
Neither of us were brave enough to actually try what The Cowfish is known for – their Burgushi but the sushi we had was the best in town. A unique balance of traditional and unconventional to say the least. So now you are asking what is Burgushi, right? It’s a cutting edge fusion of the burger and sushi, burgushi items include sushi rolls created using burger components, and pick-up style sandwiches created using sushi components!
I ordered the Mad Mango-cado Roll and The Tree Hugger. The Mad Mango is what I typically get no matter where I go (minus the avocado… I don’t like it. Can’t ever get use to the texture). The Tree Hugger was a roll I decided to try to step outside my comfort zone and I’m so glad I did! Shiitake mushrooms, fried portabella, red pepper, cucumber, red onion, basil rolled with brown rice and quinoa. Served with wasabi yuzu dipping sauce. So so good!!!
Makenna tried The Cowfish Bento Box. It’s a combo meal featuring both burger and sushi, including a mini-burger with American cheese, pickles and chopped red onion, sweet potato fries, Thai cucumbers, edamame and choice of a 4 piece sushi roll (she chose the California). Kendall enjoyed er Ninja Nuggets (regular chicken nuggets) with french fries and apple slices.
If cocktails, drafts, beer, and imports is your thing, the Cowfish won’t disappoint you. My husband tried the Buffalos & Bacon and the Backyard Brew.
Backyard Brew is a mix of Firefly Moonshine Apple Pie, Fireball whiskey, apple juice, and cinnamon. I would describe it has liquid apple pie with a kick. The fireball hits the back of your throat with the spice of the cinnamon then the apple juice comes along to cool everything down.
Buffalos & Bacon (yes, BACON!) combines Buffalo Trace bourbon, cherry liqueur, angostura and
orange bitters, honey, candied bacon. I didn’t even take a sip but my husband said it was incredibly smooth and the subtle bacon taste was a nice addition.
If you are looking for a place unlike any other, The Cowfish is your place. Something for everyone, even picky eaters! The Cowfish is located on the first floor of CityWalk next to Red Oven Pizza Bakery, with a second floor back entrance located across from Bob Marley: A Tribute to Freedom. Its opening rounds out the year-long historic expansion to Universal CityWalk and caps off an epic year for Universal Orlando Resort. Other new venues recently added as part of the expansion include VIVO Italian Kitchen, Red Oven Pizza Bakery, Antojitos Authentic Mexican Food and Hot Dog Hall of Fame.
