When to Visit Chicago
To get the best deals on hotels, April to May and September to October are the best times to visit the Windy City. There are few visitors at this time and some great festivals during Chicago’s festival season. Two of the most popular are the Hyde Park Jazz Festival and the Chicago International Film Festival. You can also get some good hotel deals during November through March if you don’t mind cold weather. There are a couple of exciting events during this time such as the McDonald’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Chicago Auto Show in February.

Business travelers can also enjoy luxury accommodations for budget prices at several four-star hotels that have state-of-the-art business facilities and special packages for business travelers.
Chicago has several national chains that offer budget prices throughout the city. There are some in the downtown area that are suitable for tourists and business travelers. In the trendy, residential neighborhoods such as Lincoln Park that are outside of the downtown area you’ll find clean and simple hotel rooms at cheap prices.
Hostels are a Good Option
If you’re a backpacker traveling around the country and would like to spend a few days in Chicago, you’re in luck. There are cheap communal hostels in the downtown area and the suburbs that have bunk beds, lockers, common lounges and communal kitchens. You can make new friends, save money and have access to all the sights and events in the city. Most of the hostels are trendy and well-maintained and they are in the party center of the city, Wrigleyville, and in a renovated 100-year-old warehouse.
House and Apartment Rentals
If you’re traveling with your family or a small group, you can save money by renting a private home. You’ll get plenty of bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen to keep your meal costs down, and amenities such as TVs with cable connections and free Wi-Fi. Vacation rental are typically cheaper than budget hotels and situated in excellent locations. There are also private rooms for rent by locals that are even cheaper, for a clean and safe place to stay in Chicago.
Things to Do
You can take bicycle tours of the city and see the historical neighborhoods and architecture up close. There are also river tours that offer sunset dinner cruises. The Hyde Park area is home to the University of Chicago where there is entertainment. The first Ferris Wheel in the world was erected in Hyde Park and there are several nightclubs, restaurants, cafes and boutiques as well as high-end retailers. You can spend some time in the Lincoln Park Zoo on the shores of Lake Michigan. Just north of downtown, this is a trendy, vibrant area and a great place to visit.
