Your mouth is there for you day in and day out, working hard for you and in return you need to do your part by having good oral hygiene. Sounds easy right? Well, more than 8 in 10 people think that they have a healthy mouth, the truth is that most Americans suffer from some form of oral disease. And you may be surprised but your oral care can impact your career opportunities, confidence and even relationships with others.
This may just seem like a normal picture (on the set of Inside Out!) to you but to me, I see someone who isn’t confident. I never full mouth smile in photos and if I do the pictures I post are highly edited. I hide my mouth when I laugh and sometimes even when I talk. Growing up, I never had a good oral care routine. My dad was a single dad and he didn’t push me to brush my teeth (or do any disciplining) so I often just “forgot” that it was something I needed to do.
After I had my first daughter, my oral health really went downhill and with each pregnancy my teeth have gotten worse. For a while in my marriage, MY HUSBAND even stopped kissing me. I knew at that point things had to change.
I thought he was being dramatic, but he isn’t alone. More than 7 in 10 Americans consider bad breath to be a “deal breaker” and 72% will avoid kissing/cuddling! Sadly, I was on the receiving side of that and this was coming from my husband.
I began pushing myself to remember to brush, floss, and use mouth rinse on a daily basis. Although I cannot reverse what I’ve already let happen for all these years but I’ve armed myself with LISTERINE® which can help prevent further damage. Now I have a reminder set on my phone to tell me to brush EVERY DAY. I know first hand that you have to have a good routine from a young age, but you also need good products to help you.
Many of the oral care issues that people experience are preventable, and adding LISTERINE® as part of your twice-daily oral care routine can help you transform the health of your mouth so you can put your best self forward and help ensure that your mouth is always on your side.
Brushing your teeth alone misses 75% of your mouth, leaving millions of germs behind. Left untreated, these germs can lead to oral care issues such as plaque and gingivitis. LISTERINE® Antiseptic cleans virtually 100% of your mouth to achieve up to five times healthier gums in two weeks and up to nine times healthier gums in four weeks.
LISTERINE® Brand executed a nation-wide survey with GFK Roper, a leading marketing insights research firm, unveiled the social impact of poor oral health.
More than 6 in 10 assume that people with oral health issues have other health issues (66%).
It is said that the harmful bacteria from your mouth enters your blood stream and attaches to fatty plaques in your heart’s blood vessels, which can lead to inflammation and upping your risk of clots that can trigger heart attacks. Scary stuff!
More than 8 in 10 Americans feel oral health issues are embarrassing (85%), and more than 9 in 10 say that they feel better overall when their mouth feels clean (93%).
Definitely have to agree with that. As I said before, I hide my mouth when I talk and laugh because I’m still so embarrassed. But when my teeth are freshly cleaned I feel better about myself and have a bit more confidence.
Nearly all American adults over the age of 20 have had cavities at some point in their lives (91%) and one in four has untreated cavities (27%).
I cannot honestly say that I know a single adult that hasn’t had a cavity in their life. Besides cutting out all sugary drinks and foods, if you have a good oral health care routine of brushing, flossing, using mouthwash, and twice-yearly dental cleanings can help lessen your chances of getting cavities.
Did you know that nearly half of American adults over the age of 30 suffer from gum disease (47.2%). That’s a scary number, but it really puts the oral health of America inter perspective, doesn’t it?
