I know, I know but stick with me, you’ve made it this far and you’re already curious, aren’t you? To keep you from scrolling to the bottom I’ll just show you the finished product right away. This Metallic Rose Gold Kitchenaid wasn’t purchased like this although you’d never know it if I hadn’t told you. Follow along and I’ll show you how you can paint a Kitchenaid stand mixer!

I debated saving my pennies for a new antique copper Kitchenaid mixer but who wants to throw around over $300 when there are lots of other things you could spend my money on? Then a lightbulb went off – paint it! But how? So I went to my Instagram buddies to ask them if anyone has painted their Kitchenaid before. I received a lot of suggestions then decided to just go for it. Unfortunately, I forgot to take photos of the process because I was too busy making Instagram stories for everyone in the real-time moment. So if you’d rather, you can head over to @MyBudgetFarmhouse, my home decor Instagram, to follow me and watch how I painted it in real time.
How to Paint A Kitchenaid Stand Mixer!

Not a lot of tools are needed but a lot of patience and a light hand. Any spray paint will do but I’ll be sharing what I used and what I know worked for me on this project. Let me just say from here on out, I forgot to take pictures of the process!!! I didn’t think anyone would want to know but I did take make Instagram Stories so all the photos in this post are screenshots from those stories except the final outcome. I tried to get the clearest parts but no judgment from here on out, okay?!
Supplies
- 2 – Rust-Oleum Metallic in Rose Gold
- 1 – Rust-Oleum Clear Durable Top Coat: Glossy
- Philips head screwdriver
- Painters tape
- Plastic drop cloth
- Small blade/box cutter
- Simple Green degreaser

1. CLEAN AND PREP your mixer: I cleaned my Kitchenaid mixer with Simple Green first to get off any grime IE: leftover cake batter. As you see in the photo above, your first step is to take apart your mixer. Use a Philips head screwdriver to take off the back motor plate, the bowl plate, and gear/mode metal strip (unscrews from the back). Keep the screws and pieces in a safe spot until you’re done.

Use some paper towels to cover the wires and motor on the back then carefully use painters tape to secure it without covering part of the mixer that you’ll be painting. Next cover half of the mixer cord with paper towels then use tape to secure it as well. Next, with painters tape, carefully cover any screw heads and parts that cannot come off. Use a box cutter to cut around the tape to be precise and avoid covering any parts of the mixer that need to be painted.

2. PAINT your mixer: In a well-ventilated area, lay your drop cloth down and place your mixer in the center. I did this in my garage. Using a quality paint and primer in one spray paint, start lightly spraying the mixer. Make sure you’re standing back about 1-2′ away and keep the spray can moving at all times.

Once you have your mixer fully coated with a thin layer, let it dry completely. Repeat the process two more times or as needed to get a smooth finish and original color is covered. It may sound crazy but I let each coat dry overnight to be safe. The key is to stand back and go very lightly. If you’re too close you will end up with pools of paint and that’s just not a good look and it will not end up looking professional.

3. SEAL AND REGLOSS your mixer: Once your mixer is fully dry and not tacky to the touch you need to seal the paint and add the high gloss look that all Kitchenaid mixers have. To do this, I used Rust-Oleum’s Clear Durable Topcoat in “Gloss”. Again, lightly spray. A little goes a long way, believe me. Let each coat fully dry before adding another coat. I was happy with the results of two coats.

Let your new mixer “cure” for about 24 hours or more before putting the parts back together. After that, you will have a brand new mixer that will last for years!
